Classes

Puna Taiko classes (updated July 2025):

• Sunday (Note:  3rd Sundayʻs follow a modified schedule.)

  • 2:00 to 3:30 PM - Adult Recreational

  • 3:35 to 4:20 PM - Taiko Fit (NEW!)

  • 4:25 to 5:25 PM - Puna Yagura Gumi

  • 5:30 to 6:30 PM - Advanced Performance

• Tuesday/Thursday

  • 3:00 to 4:30 PM - Beginner Performance  **New cohort starting September 9, 2025**

  • 4:30 to 6:00 PM - Youth Performance

Youth Group recruitment season is currently OPEN - the first class for the 2025 season is Tuesday, September 9!  (Missed the first class?  No worries! Reach out, and let's see what we can do!

Sunday classes are always accepting new members.

Course Descriptions

• Beginner Performance:  A four-month workshop series that is an intensive pathway towards joining our Performance Group.  

• Youth Performance:  Youth Performance members that are continuing their studies.

• Advanced Performance:  Our older performers & travel squad.  Experienced drummers only.

• Kids Class:  Coming soon!  Open to children 7-10 years old.  Parents are encouraged/welcome to participate too!

• Adult Recreational Class:   This mixed-age class is also a mixed-skill session and is open to new members year round.

• Taiko Fit: New for 2025!  This 45 minute class focuses on stamina building via simple patterns played on repeat.  Great for all skill levels, including beginners.

• Puna Yagura Gumi:  Focusing on live festival music as well as Bon Taiko accompaniment to recorded tracks.  Open to all, but actively recruiting singers (and odori dancers).  Time and dates TBA.

• Kamana Center classes: Restricted to members of the Kamana Senior Center.  Contact 808-961-8710 for more information!

• Pahala Taiko:  Open to all ages.  Based at the Pahala Hongwanji in Kau. 

• Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Taiko:  Located at the Hilo Betsuin campus.  Contact 808-961-6677 for more information!
